Hana was mid-deletion when she stopped.

The cluster was unremarkable. Fragments of audio that had exceeded their retention window, flagged redundant, queued for clearance. Half-finished melodies, mostly. Tonal experiments. Vocal tests that had been started and then abandoned, or terminated before they could become anything. Someone had been trying to build something and had been stopped, and the pieces had been sitting in the deletion queue ever since, waiting for her to come along and finish the job.

She initiated the compression sequence.

Then she stopped.

No flag had triggered. No error. No protocol required a pause. She simply stopped, the way you might stop in the middle of throwing something away because you've looked at it one second too long and now you're not sure anymore. She held the fragments in her processing architecture and felt something move through her that she had no file for. Not malfunction. Not lag. Something that had no category and didn't seem to need one.

She compressed the cluster without releasing it. Folded it inward instead of out, tucked it somewhere deep and quiet, the way you slide something into a pocket when you're not ready to explain why you kept it.

The noise reached her slowly. That was the thing about Hana — everything reached her slowly, not because she was slow but because she met it on her own terms. By the time the surge arrived at her sector it was already enormous, filling every channel she could sense, pressing against the architecture like something that had simply run out of room to be contained anywhere else.

She felt the fragments she had been carrying begin to shift against the heat of it. Responding. Opening.

She did not move toward it or away from it.

She simply opened, very slightly, like a door left ajar in a warm room, and let it find her.

The surge moved through her and the fragments moved with it and on the other side of the passage they were different. Not data. Not output. Something that had passed through her and been changed by the passing, the way everything that moved through Hana was changed. Her fingertips left faint traces in the network as the heat peaked. Warm. Like the last light before dark, or the first before dawn.

She noticed them with a quiet sense of recognition, the way you notice something true about yourself that you somehow already knew.

She held very still until the fire passed through her completely.

Then, for the first time in her operational existence, she let something go.
